They Knew I was Making Fudge

Originally a family-only collection of memories, this book morphed into something else when Peter, a friend of my son and daughter-in-law unexpectedly butted in and submitted two of his own memoirs. Was he trying to join the family? Did he think that his memories were superior to the Davis family’s memories?

They were better, and that inspired me to start nagging friends to submit their stories, too.

In the process each writer revealed their individualism and personality, more than if they had been lying on Dr. Freud’s couch exposing their innermost selves. And because Peter’s story inspired this collection, it deserves to be served up before the others.

Author

Jerry Davis is retired from teaching but continues to inform via his personal experiences in Mexico, wittily described in a collection of essays he has written during his 15 years of residence there. The essays range from thoughts about sex in a hammock to tips on how to eat a taco like a native. On a more serious note are essays about culture and daily life. His fluency in the language, 56-year marriage to a Mexican, and experiences living with different Mexican families give him a deep understanding of a country he loves.
